The command is part art, part magic, and part basic technology that has remained mostly unchanged for dozens of years.
When I read this article, I realize that not only do I know it all (almost…), but I generally assume everything else does. It’s absurd on many levels. How long did it take me to learn this? Years, but on the CLI so nicely fits together that it feels natural.
In practice I see daily talented engineers who never use a terminal. They work with visual studio, never typed
make, and seldom seem to know where their source files are. They are totally fine, as long as the CI works.
As far as I am concerned, the command line stays as relevant as ever. It makes me productive, and lets me create tools that make others ever more so.
